Well basicly the previous posts just show what i did in Capetown daytime after I arrived. That's only half the story *g*. The story becomes interesting far before I even entered my first transport to Capetown. And this time I felt prepared a lot better than I was on my trip to Graaff Reinett. But that only means more things can actually go wrong, or so I learned. It started when i tried entering my Bus. I hadn't booked on it because the agency had told me there was lots of space on that Bus and for me it was kind of unpredictable if I would be able to make it on time (o the agency and due to my work). The bus was to start at 10.20 pm, but a colleague was so nice as to fetch me, but she was of course long gone when the bus arrived - since i had to be there 30 minutes prior departure. When the bus came they told me they were all booked out and I couldn't join on. - I had to take a taxi back home, frustrated and that, not sure what about or if my trip was to happen.
My colleagues were pretty surprised as well then, to find me pretty frustrated sitting in my offices that next morning. But luckily they know the local overregional traffic pretty well, and knew there were taxis going to Capetown every morning (cross country taxis, like small 14 seater Busses), one of which took me for 150 Rand ~ 14 euro, half an hour after my first colleague came to work, on its (and then as well mine) trip to Cape town. And that's a distance of about 400 kilometres, so the pricing is pretty fair :). The bad thing about those taxis is, they catch you from home and deliver you where you wanna go to, meaning in the consequence that the trips take a lot longer than with a bus. But hey, my boss herself brought me to the taxi and I managed to go for cape town, so who cares, and my accomodation was still booked eh?
Driving in this Taxi was an adventure on its own and you quite get to see interesting places :) (townships, mainly). Well when we arrived in Capetown 10 hours later (most of the others left earlier and we had several breaks getting newly divided between different taxis) and I finally found my accommodation (The Carneval court, I can really recommend them) the troubles went on. It wasn't as if I got my room, no, but my trip became cheapoer again - since I was like ten hours later then I predicted, they already had cancelled my reservation and the room was yet full again, leaving me only the option to move into a dormatory (Capetown was pretty busy that weekend with tourists), a nice 4 bed room and sharing and all, but hey everybody was german, I could have been in cologne :). And in the end I was quite lucky at least getting some place to sleep, it could have come worse. Another nice thing was, that the carneval chourt has an attached bar/club, with some decent parties, so I could actually spend most of my evenings there.
Nuff said).
On the evening of my arrival (despite a lack of sleep)I came to start right on into the partytown - I met with a guy I got to know via the DAAD (the exchange service that paid part of my flight) and some of his contacts in Capetown, to party a little in the irish pub, where they also had a live band (seems as if every good bar in south africa has a live band ready on the weekend, free of charge and pretty good. Wehad a little chat, a few beers and a nice evening. Later the evening I went with Patrick (another german whos making a Practical in Capetown) up to the Carneval Court's Bar, where the band had their last song (another band ofc) and had another beer or two with him before I retreated into my room. Pretty good start on that trip, after all :)
The second evening I went out pretty early, after two short nights and my trip on the Table mountain my body claimed its rest, but that had a few advantages of his own, since the next day started of early (as I wrote) and ended up very nice, since on Sundays they make a Braai starting at 5 pm in the Carnevals court (Barbecue is the english word I believe), and near to anyone with a bed there was there, salads for free meat to be brought. I had quite a difficulty finding myself a store open on sundays, but managed. And that evening had additional charms, not only i got to know a lot of people (ex roommates, roommates and whoever was there and not in company), no, later the evening I moved to the bar, and the barkeepers had a lot of free shots in reserve hooray (and they got a lot of tips that evening, promise); the music was very good as well and it was a nice, relaxed partyatmosphere... I'm so gonna miss capetown this weekend :)
The next day then was the long trip back, in a full unclimatised bus at 40 degree at least in the bus, but hey, I got some german news magazine at least and the trip was cheap and on time - and adding to that, in the evening they even showed ong bak 2 and the like... now that's entertainment on a tour :D; on time ment though that I was returning at 10:30 pm that night, and the taxis here seem to get expensive the later it becomes... ah well, south african prizes are not comparable, but I feel robbed anyways.
Needless to say I worked right from the next day again, eh?
